Welcome to the Congress!

You are warmly welcomed to the 3rd IEEE Nordic Student and Young Professionals Congress. We hope that you will enjoy your weekend, learn interesting new things and make new friends!
The weekend will feature 3 days of talks and activities spread out across 2 countries and a sea, 2 time zones, and 3 congress locations. We have a mammoth twenty speakers lined up to educate and inform on different sustainability themes.

Day 3

The final active day of the Nordic SYP 2019, we dock in Stockholm and bid farewell to the Symphony. We make our way to KTH, our home for the day, before checking in to the Rex hotel later that night

07:00 – 09:30 Breakfast

We start the day with a good breakfast buffet onboard the Symphony, and get ourselves ready for the day in Sweden.

09:45 Cruise docks in Stockholm

We pack up our things and say goodbye to the Symphony for the last time and say hello to Sweden, home of ikea, meatballs, coffee breaks and everybody’s favourite pop foursome – Ace of base!

10:00 – 10:55 Travel to KTH

We will be met at the dock by some Swedish volunteers who will help us navigate the public transport to KTH University.

10:55 – 11:05 Intro to YP Sweden

Our other co host and co organizer Gerard delivers an introduction to YP Sweden and the days activities.

11:05 – 11:15 Intro to WIE Sweden

The WIE Sweden section will be giving a talk on the challenges and problems facing WIE chapters throughout R8. The talk will highlight some of the obstacles faced by WIE chapter today and how they have tried to overcome them. The WIE Sweden section played a big part in organizing the inaugural NSYP in 2015, and it is heartwarming to see their continued support of the event.

11:15 – 11:45 WIE talk

We are very thankful that the chair of WIE Region 8, Ana Cigarán Romero will be back to give a talk based on presenting WIE to new members, and how to highlight the benefits and advantages to increase membership.

11:45 – 12:15 Volvo Cars “A vision of the future”

We are delighted to announce that Waled Elsayed from Volvo Cars will be giving a talk called “A vision of the future” at NSYP19. Waled completed his Masters in Sapienza Università di Roma in 2016 and has been working with Volvo Cars, a company dedicated to improving sustainibility in transport, for the last two years.
Waled has also experience in the design and constuction of sustainable and energy-sufficient homes having taken part in the Solar decathlon competition run by the USA department of energy over the course of a year.

As a human-centric car company, Volvo Cars are a brand for people who care about other people and the world in which we live. This is at the core of their business and of their approach to sustainability. Volvos commitment is about re-thinking sustainability, and goes beyond their operations and cars, and into society.

12:15 – 12:45 KTH – Extreme Environment Electronics for Venus

Carl-Mikael Zetterling, a professor in solid state electronics at KTH Royal Institute of Technology, has agreed to speak at NSYP19. His talk entitled “Extreme Environment Electronics for Venus” will focus on research to develop electronics that can withstand harsh environments.

The electronics are based on silicon carbide, a semiconducting material that can withstand the extremely harsh climate on Venus.

12:45 – 13:30 Lunch

Lunch will be provided to participants. The lunch is sourced from a local sustainable food provider.

13:30 – 14:00 Reduced GHG-emissions through electrification of agriculture

Dr. El Houssein Chouaib Harik will be speaking at NSYP19 giving a talk entitled “Reduced GHG-emissions through electrification of agriculture”.

In this presentation we deal with the ongoing research at the Center for Precision Agriculture aimed at reducing the use of fossil fuels in agriculture. We address the concept of innovative technical solutions and methodologies applicable at farm level.

14:00-14:30 Securing the internet of things with AI

We are proud to announce that Celestine Iwendi will speak at NSYP19. Celestine Iwendi is an Associate Professor in China, a Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers IEEE, a board member of IEEE Sweden, a Chartered Engineer and a Fellow of The Higher Education Academy, United Kingdom.

“Securing the Internet of Intelligent of Things using Ai (INTRIXIT)”. Cybersecurity and hardware security have become the fundamental threats for major businesses today. Increasing attack includes substandard attacks, such as phishing, and on a larger scale sophisticated Distributed Denial of Service (DDOS) attacks.

The security of Internet of Intelligent of Things (IIoT) and 5G/6G Security Connectivity of the Cyber Physical systems is now a big research issue.

14:30 – 15:00 DNV – The power grid in 2050

We are pleased to announce that Ambra Sannino has agreed to speak at NSYP19. The talk called “The power grid in 2050” will focus on Ambra’s work at DNV-GL, and their recently published Energy Transition Outlook, ETO, report for 2019.

The ETO is DNV GL’s view on the energy future through to 2050 modeling 10 regions and the impact on 3 industry sectors. It is a forecast of the most likely path ahead.

15:00 – 15:15 Fika

It is close to impossible to visit Sweden without experiencing a Swedish fika and this conference will be no different!

15:15 – 15:45 Vattenfall – Fossil free living within one generation

Gustav Frid will be giving a talk about sustainability and Vattenfall. Vattenfall’s purpose is to Power Climate Smarter Living and enable fossil free living within one generation.

The purpose provides a clear direction for their strategy and operations, where sustainability considerations are fully integrated. Vattenfall’s strategy reflects the UN Sustainable Development goals and six of these goals have been identified as most relevant to the company and to which Vattenfall can provide the most meaningful global contribution.

15:45 – 16:15 Pressing challenges and opportunities that can be found at the intersection of engineering and sustainability

Ruben DeMoor – Chief Compromise Officer: The engineer as an architect of sustainable growth. Historically, it has been up to engineers to find a compromise between scientific possibility, real-world constraint and business interest to conceive a technical solution for an issue. The role of the engineer as a “solution architect” has not changed, yet the environment in which he/she operates is becoming ever more complex.

New stakeholders appeared, more constraints have arisen, budgets are being strained and costs increase. Opportunities to innovate and develop present themselves at a pace and on a scale unprecedented in human history. However, the perceived incompatibility between technical progress, economic growth, and sustainable development leads to polarisation and friction in society.

In this session, we will explore why the engineer is the ideal candidate to solve this conundrum, focusing on the competences and skills pivotal to take charge of the situation.
