IEEE came to Nigeria around 1976 with the help of some patriotic professionals, but went moribund by the end of the 80s. The Nigeria Section was reactivated at a meeting held on 29th May 2000 at the Nigeria Society of Engineers Auditorium, Victoria Island, Lagos which was attended by more than sixty (60) members, and convened through concerted efforts of some volunteers including Messrs Eric Femi, Sunday Faturoti, Olumuyiwa Taiwo and Isaac Adekanye. The section has been waxing stronger ever since.

Today IEEE Nigeria section has over 969 active members among the over 2,500 ranging from seasoned professionals to undergraduate students. The Nigerian Chapter with headquarters presently in Port Harcourt has one sub-section and several societies and affinity groups. The most prominent being GOLD AG, Communications Society and Computer Society. Women In Engineering (WIE) used to be very active under the leadership of late Clementina Saduwa who rose to be the international chair until her life was cut short by armed robbers in Lagos.
