FLEXIBILITY MARKETS – UNLEASHING THE POTENTIAL OF DISTRIBUTED RESOURCES (21TH OCTOBER 2020)

February 21, 2020 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

The Norwegian section of IEEE Power & Energy invites to the seminar Flexibility Markets – Unleashing the potential of distributed resources
Wednesday 21th of October 2020, 13:00-15:10

Place: Online Webinar
Chairman: Erick Fernando Alves, Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), IEEE Power & Energy, Norge

All Transmission System Operators in the Nordic system operate under the principle of the most socio-economic valuable solutions for balancing demand and generation. For that to happen in this new context, consumers and generators must be able to provide their flexibility to the market. In other words, they must be able to alter and sell their flexibility in demand and generation according to system operation needs. Moreover, aggregation of flexibility services also lays out the enhanced role of Distribution System Operators, particularly in procurement of ancillary service, flexibility, data management and integration of electric vehicles.

In this event, we will hear from different actors on how they are tackling these challenges and working towards digitizing and modernizing the electricity grid for higher efficiency, flexibility and resilience.

AGENDA

13:00 “Welcome“, Erick F. Alves (IEEE PES Norway Chapter)

13:05 “Research on flexibility in CINELDI – pilots and TSO/DSO coordinationical aspects including special design issues“, Hanne Sæle, SINTEF Energy:
Download: Slides
FME CINELDI (2016-2024) has the objective to enable a cost-efficient realization of the future flexible and robust electricity distribution grid, which will pave the ground for increased distributed generation from renewable resources, electrification of transport, and more efficient energy use. The research is multidisciplinary (power engineering, cybernetics, information and communication technology, supported by social sciences), and performed in close cooperation with user partners (pilot projects). In 2020, flexibility is a common priority area for the research in CINELDI.

13:45 “Flexibility markets – The NODES journey“, Hallstein Hagen, NODES Market:
Download: Slides
EU’s Clean Energy Package is a framework for change.  It has focus on flexibility and market principle of equal treatment of generation, demand-side response, storage aggregation of consumers, generators and demand response permitted.  It also lays out the enhanced role of the DSO, particularly in procurement of ancillary service, flexibility, data management and integration of electrical vehicles. NODES AS is addressing these topics with its innovative market design and its bottom up approach. Hallstein Hagen will give some details about the NODES journey so far.

14:25 “Bringing new technologies into the balancing markets – Pilot examples from Statnett“, Kari Dalen, Statnett:
Download: Slides
Statnett will provide their first insights from an ongoing pilot where electrical vehicles, panel heaters, electrical boilers and building management centrals are being tested as tools for balancing the power grid. More about the pilot can be found here.

14:55 “Wrap-up
