The miniaturization of modular robots and advances in distributed algorithms mean that we can envisage the production of a self-reconfigurable programmable matter. The concept of programmable matter is to replace the atoms that make up ordinary matter with micro-robots. These micro-robots give this matter new capabilities in sensing and actuation. All that’s needed is for the robots to be able to move in relation to each other, and we can envisage a self-reconfigurable program matter, i.e. one that can change shape at will, but we’ll show that this property is hard to achieve. Through recent research, we will illustrate the computer science issues and the first hardware solutions proposed.
