Abstract:

Since 1954 when the first commercial high voltage direct current installation was commissioned in Gotland, Sweden by ABB, HVDC technology has had a truly revolutionary impact on the way that electrical energy is delivered to consumers all over the world, and is now an indispensable part of the power transmission systems. In the last 60 years, ABB has continuously developed the concept and broadened the number of applications, from interconnecting national and regional grids, to integrating large scale renewable e.g. wind and solar, from connecting bulk generation over long distance, to providing power from shore to offshore oil and gas platforms, from embedded DC links in AC grids, to city-center infeed and grid upgrades, etc. In this lecture, firstly an overview of HVDC technology development will be presented, including both HVDC classic and HVDC Light technology; secondly, the key functionalities of HVDC will be described in the context of megatrend and grand challenges of power system evolution; thirdly, the representative HVDC projects will be introduced; in the end, the future technology development steps of HVDC will be discussed.

Biography of the presenter

Description

Dr. Cathy Yao Chen received her Ph.D. in Power System Automation from Beijing Jiaotong University, China, in 2008. She joined ABB Corporate Research China in 2008, where she took various roles as research group manager, senior principal scientist, etc, and worked in the research fields of power conversion and system integration technology for renewable generation, impact analysis and mitigation solutions for accommodating electrical vehicles into distribution network, the application of power electronics technology in conventional power plant for efficiency and reliability improvement, etc. In 2015 she joined ABB Corporate Research Sweden as manager of Electrical Systems Department, where the research activities are focused on power systems, power electronics, machines and drives.
