From 3rd to 29th February 2020, the Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK)-SB held the IEEE Humanitarian Activities Committee (HAC) Skillup workshops. The event was organized by the IEEE HAC Skillup program, through the IEEE-NAU Students Branch, in collaboration with the Students Union Government (SUG) Unizik and supported by Consultant Network Affinity Group.

The opening ceremony was held at Faculty of Arts conference auditorium. During the flag-off ceremony, Dr. Mbonu and Reginald made presentations on Robotics and Embedded systems respectively. Dr. Kennedy introduced the IEEE HAC skillup program and subsequently made presentations on “Osmotic Computing”.

Notable IEEE volunteers that were in attendance included: Engr. Dr. Kennedy C. Okafor – IEEE HAC Project manager/Chair Consultants Network Affinity group, Engr. Dr. S. E. Mbonu – IEEE RAS member, Engr. Reginald Ogu – IEEE Nigeria Section Webmaster, and Engr. Dr. Azubuike Aniedu – IEEE UNIZIK SB Councillor.

The opening remarks from the IEEE HAC Skillup Advisor – Prof Gloria Chukwudebe was presented by Dr. Kennedy. In her remarks, she encouraged the participants to take advantage of the HAC skillup packages to identify and solve problems in Nigeria.

The main hands-on training kicked-off from 4th February and ended on 29th of February. Participant had hands-on training on four modules:

  • Web Development,
  • Java and Andriod Development,
  • Graphics Design,
  • Robotics and Microcontroller programming.

At the end of the training, the participants were able to construct develop obstacle Avoidance Robots, Java Mobile app calculator and designed multi-purpose website  (among other things). Over 300 students registered for the 2020 IEEE Skill-up HAC.
