The use of wearables in wheelchair sports performance measurement

The use of wearables in able bodied sports is very common, with its application across all levels of sports. For wheelchair sports, hardly any suitable performance measurement methods were available, hampering applied scientific research and scientific knowledge transfer to the sport. A method using IMUs for wheelchair mobility performance measurement was developed and applied for research, that is now also applied for daily practice within elite wheelchair sports. With feedback about the performance, the intensity of training and match situations, athletes and coaches are empowered for better match preparation and avoidance of physical overload. Similar principles could also be used for all level wheelchair athletes and daily wheelchair users.

Rienk van der Slikke was most of his career involved in research/education in the application of inertial sensors for ambulatory monitoring. Initially for evaluation of orthopedic joint replacement and during his recent Ph.D. for the measurement of wheelchair kinematics in sports. As a post-doc he is now appointed as researcher for the course Human Movement Technology at The Hague University of Applied Sciences the Delft University of technology and as embedded scientist wheelchair sports for the Dutch national sports federation.
