A message from Silvia Siri, Chair of the Italian Chapter of the IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems Society (2021-Present)
It is a great pleasure for me to serve as the Chair of the Italian Chapter of the IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems Society. At the end of 2020, together with my colleague of the University of Genova, Simona Sacone, I initiated the process, with the IEEE, to create this Chapter, that was approved in February 2021. Since then, the Chapter has started its activities with a high number of volunteers, mainly colleagues working in the area of ITS and belonging to Italian universities, who have shown great interest in this new initiative.
To briefly introduce myself, I am Associate Professor of automatic control at the University of Genova and my research interests are strongly related with ITS since they deal with modeling, optimization and control of transportation systems, with specific focus on vehicular traffic, freight logistics, electric mobility. My experience as IEEE volunteer started some years ago. Presently, I am Senior Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Intelligent Transport Systems, Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Automation Science and Engineering and Editor of the Newsletter of the IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems Society. During the triennium 2019-2021 I was Member of the Board of Governors of the IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems Society.
The Italian Chapter of the IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems Society has the main goal to create a strong community of researchers working in Italy, both in academy institutions and in the industry sector, with research interests in the area of ITS. I hope that this Chapter will become an effective instrument for these researchers to meet, to share new ideas for projects and collaborations, to promote common actions for both education and research. In addition, the events organized by the Chapter will aim to be a fruitful occasion to spread the knowledge of this community to other scientific communities and to local/regional/national/international institutions, companies, associations and stakeholders of the mobility and transport sector, as well as to involve (high school, Master and PhD) students in learning initiatives in the area of ITS.
I am very proud and honored to have the opportunity to Chair this Chapter which covers a very broad area of interest, playing a relevant role in the changes that our society is recently facing and requiring a deep knowledge and expertise in different areas, essential to design and manage transport systems that are smart, modern and sustainable.

È un grande piacere per me svolgere il ruolo di Chair dell’Italian Chapter della IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems Society. Alla fine del 2020, insieme alla mia collega dell’Università di Genova, Simona Sacone, ho avviato il processo, con l’IEEE, per creare questo Chapter, che è stato approvato nel febbraio 2021. Da allora, il Chapter ha iniziato le sue attività con un gran numero di volontari, principalmente colleghi di università italiane che lavorano nell’area dei sistemi di trasporto intelligente, che hanno mostrato grande interesse per questa nuova iniziativa.
Per presentarmi brevemente, sono Professore Associato di Controlli Automatici presso l’Università di Genova e i miei interessi di ricerca sono fortemente connessi ai sistemi di trasporto intelligente poiché mi occupo di modellizzazione, ottimizzazione e controllo di sistemi di trasporto, con focus specifico su traffico veicolare, logistica delle merci, mobilità elettrica. La mia esperienza come volontario IEEE è iniziata alcuni anni fa. Attualmente sono Senior Editor delle IEEE Transactions on Intelligent Transport Systems, Associate Editor delle IEEE Transactions on Automation Science and Engineering e Editor della Newsletter della IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems Society. Nel triennio 2019-2021 sono stata Membro del Board of Governors della IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems Society.
Il Chapter italiano della IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems Society ha l’obiettivo principale di creare una forte comunità di ricercatori che lavorano in Italia, sia nelle istituzioni accademiche che nel settore industriale, con interessi di ricerca connessi ai sistemi di trasporto e mobilità smart. Auspico che questo Chapter possa diventare uno strumento efficace per questi ricercatori di incontrarsi, condividere nuove idee per progetti e collaborazioni, promuovere azioni comuni sia per la formazione che per la ricerca. Inoltre, gli eventi organizzati dal Chapter vorranno essere una proficua occasione per diffondere e comunicare le competenze di questa comunità ad altre comunità scientifiche e ad istituzioni locali/regionali/nazionali/internazionali, aziende, associazioni e stakeholders del settore della mobilità e dei trasporti, nonché coinvolgere gli studenti (delle scuole superiori, universitari e dottorandi) in iniziative di apprendimento e divulgazione.
Sono molto orgogliosa e onorata di avere l’opportunità di coordinare questo Chapter che copre un’area di interesse estremamente ampia e con un ruolo cruciale nei cambiamenti che la nostra società sta recentemente affrontando, richiedendo profonde conoscenze e competenze in diverse discipline, necessarie per poter progettare e gestire sistemi di trasporto che siano al contempo intelligenti, moderni e sostenibili.
