An introduction to new paradigms of collaborative satellite-based navigation in ITS

Brief Abstract

In the last decade, the availability of reliable and low-latency communications has extended the paradigm of vehicular and sensor networks by opening new frontiers to time-constrained applications in ITS. Along with the evolution of integrated navigation units in vehicles, indeed, the provision of accurate and reliable absolute positioning data is still essential. In such units, position and navigation based on Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), is then expected to be complemented by other sensors, and new smart integration solutions are being developed to overcome its intrinsic weaknesses. The lecture will introduce paradigms and novel perspectives enabled by the joint exploitation of satellite-based raw measurements and low-latency networks, such as cooperative integrity of the positioning/timing data, enhancement of estimation accuracy in harsh conditions, accurate time synchronization, which are only few among the possibilities to fuel next-gen ITS.

Brief Bio

Dr. Alex Minetto received the B.Sc. and M.sc. degrees in Telecommunications Engineering from Politecnico di Torino, Turin, Italy and his Ph.D. degree in Electrical, Electronics and Communications Engineering, in 2020. He joined the Department of Electronics and Telecommunications of Politecnico di Torino in 2019 as research and teaching assistant. In 2019 he was awarded at the Galileo Master Competition with CAPS.loc, a Cooperative Aided Positioning System for enhanced localization in Android smartphones. In 2015 he joined the Technical and Scientific Support (TSS) division at the European Organization for the Exploitation of Metereological Satellites (EUMETSAT), Darmstadt, Germany. His current research interests cover digital signal processing and advanced Bayesian estimation applied to Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) cooperative receivers.
