Best MSc and PhD theses 2024 Ceremony
Valtteri Karmitsa and Raju Ahamed Honored for Their Theses on System-On-Chip Co-Simulation and 5G Millimeter-Wave Circuits
The IEEE Finland SP/CAS (Signal Processing and Circuits and Systems) has announced the winners of the best theses in the field of Signal Processing and Circuits and Systems for the year 2024. Valtteri Karmitsa from the University of Oulu was awarded for the Best Master’s Thesis, and Raju Ahamed from Aalto University received the award for the Best PhD Thesis.
The awards were based on the significance and quality of the research in their respective fields. The evaluation criteria include the importance of the problem addressed, theoretical contribution, contribution to industrial practice, appropriateness of method/research design, and the time spent on the dissertation/master thesis work. The winners were selected by a committee led by Professor Ari Visa from Tampere University, with members from various Finnish universities.
Valtteri Karmitsa, a Master’s graduate from the University of Oulu, was recognized for his thesis titled “Pre-validation of SoC via Hardware and Software Co-simulation.” His work addresses the challenges of verifying complex System-on-Chip (SoC) designs by proposing a co-simulation methodology that integrates hardware and software earlier in the development process. This approach allows for earlier detection of integration issues, improving the efficiency and reliability of SoC development.
Raju Ahamed, a PhD graduate from Aalto University, was awarded for his dissertation titled “Millimeter-Wave Front-End Circuits for Wireless Communications.” His research focuses on designing and characterizing millimeter-wave circuits essential for 5G and beyond. Ahamed’s work on components like transmit-receive switches, amplifiers, and phase shifters addresses key challenges in achieving high-performance wireless communication systems.
The winners were announced at the IEEE Finland SP/CAS annual event at Lecture Hall Odeion, Room 2007, located at Maarintie 8 (TUAS-building), 2nd floor (directly from the entrance hall), Otaniemi at 11:00h on Friday, September 13th 2024. This event celebrates outstanding research and innovation in digital technologies.
